Vehicle details

What the dealer wants from you (and the government).

Out-the-door sticker, before tax.

Cash you’re putting in up front.

What you’re trading in (zero if none).

Your state’s rate — e.g. 6.625.

Loan details

The part that makes future-you do the math at 2am.

Annual interest rate. Enter as a normal percent — 6.9, not 0.069.

Common: 36, 48, 60, 72. Longer term, more interest.

Monthly ownership costs

The stuff salespeople conveniently leave off the brochure.

Your real quote, not the optimistic one.

Oil, tires, brakes — the boring future.

Income & existing debts

So we can tell if this is a vibe or a problem.

Take-home (after tax) gives the most honest answer.

Credit cards, student loans, etc. Exclude rent.

Costs people forget

The line items that don’t show up on the dealer’s quote sheet for a Toyota Prius.

  • AWD adds weight and cost a fuel-economy hit

AWD Prius gives up a few MPG to the FWD version. In snow country it's worth it; in the Sun Belt it isn't.

  • Hybrid battery replacement is rare but real

Toyota hybrid batteries routinely outlast the rest of the car. Replacements are $2–$3k installed when they do eventually fail.

  • Insurance is low because the Prius is slow

And the demographic is older. Both are advantages for your premium.

Reality check before you buy

Toyota Prius
  • The new Prius is genuinely good-looking. It is no longer the appliance it used to be.

  • Prime (plug-in) version: 44 miles of EV-only range. The price premium pays back if you charge at home.

  • Cargo is smaller than a Corolla Hatchback. Plan for that.

  • There is no Prius Hybrid SUV; that's a RAV4 Hybrid.

Common questions about owning a Toyota Prius

Honest answers, no sales pitch.

  • Prius vs Prius Prime?
Prime has 44 miles of EV-only range and a slightly higher price. If you can plug in at home, the Prime is dramatically cheaper to drive.
  • Is the Prius reliable?
Among the most reliable cars on sale. Drivetrains regularly cross 300,000 miles with normal maintenance.
  • Does it tow?
No. It's a sedan with a hybrid drivetrain. Don't tow with it.
