Can I Afford a Subaru Outback?

The wagon that everyone calls an SUV. Long-roof family hauler with standard AWD, off-pavement-capable Wilderness trim, and a 50-year reputation built on dogs and ski racks.

Example values below. Edit anything — price, APR, insurance — to fit your situation.

Car affordability inputs

Try a preset

Vehicle details

What the dealer wants from you (and the government).

Out-the-door sticker, before tax.

Cash you’re putting in up front.

What you’re trading in (zero if none).

Your state’s rate — e.g. 6.625.

Loan details

The part that makes future-you do the math at 2am.

Annual interest rate. Enter as a normal percent — 6.9, not 0.069.

Common: 36, 48, 60, 72. Longer term, more interest.

Monthly ownership costs

The stuff salespeople conveniently leave off the brochure.

Your real quote, not the optimistic one.

Oil, tires, brakes — the boring future.

Income & existing debts

So we can tell if this is a vibe or a problem.

Take-home (after tax) gives the most honest answer.

Credit cards, student loans, etc. Exclude rent.

Costs people forget

The line items that don’t show up on the dealer’s quote sheet for a Subaru Outback.

  • Wilderness trim changes the tire bill

Bigger, knobbier rubber rolls slower, wears faster, and costs more per set. The trade: it goes where stock can't.

  • Roof racks aren't free aerodynamics

Aero racks are fine; box racks at highway speed cost noticeable MPG. Take them off when you're not using them.

  • The dog tax

Two-thirds of Outback owners have dogs, and two-thirds of those have rear-seat covers, cargo liners, and a constant supply of fur in the HVAC. Plan for the interior to age.

Reality check before you buy

Subaru Outback
  • Outback isn't fast. The XT (turbo) is a different car and costs more to run.

  • Long roof means everything fits. The rear seat reclines. Family road trips love this car.

  • Wilderness trim is genuinely capable, expensive to tire, and a slightly bumpier daily ride.

  • Touring trim crosses into Lexus money. Cross-shop the NX300 / RX350 before you go top of the line.

Common questions about owning a Subaru Outback

Honest answers, no sales pitch.

  • Outback vs Forester vs Crosstrek?
Crosstrek is the smallest and cheapest. Forester is tall and roomy. Outback is the longest, with the most cargo room and the highest top-trim price.
  • Is the turbo (XT) worth it?
If you drive in mountains, tow occasionally, or merge on 80-mph highways daily — yes. Otherwise the non-turbo is fine and noticeably cheaper to fuel.
  • Can it really go off-road?
Wilderness yes. Regular trims to a reasonable point — gravel roads, fire trails, packed snow. Don't compare it to a Wrangler.
