Subaru Forester · reality check

Can I Afford a Subaru Forester?

The square one. Symmetrical AWD standard, lots of glass, predictable handling, mediocre acceleration. The PNW Outback's spiritual cousin and the official car of public-radio listeners.

Example values below. Edit anything — price, APR, insurance — to fit your situation.

Vehicle details

What the dealer wants from you (and the government).

Out-the-door sticker, before tax.

Cash you’re putting in up front.

What you’re trading in (zero if none).

Your state’s rate — e.g. 6.625.

Loan details

The part that makes future-you do the math at 2am.

Annual interest rate. Enter as a normal percent — 6.9, not 0.069.

Common: 36, 48, 60, 72. Longer term, more interest.

Monthly ownership costs

The stuff salespeople conveniently leave off the brochure.

Your real quote, not the optimistic one.

Oil, tires, brakes — the boring future.

Income & existing debts

So we can tell if this is a vibe or a problem.

Take-home (after tax) gives the most honest answer.

Credit cards, student loans, etc. Exclude rent.

Costs people forget

The line items that don’t show up on the dealer’s quote sheet for a Subaru Forester.

  • Boxer engines like fresh oil

The horizontally-opposed 4-cyl needs oil changes at every recommended interval. Some early-2010s Subarus had oil consumption issues; recent ones are dramatically better but stick to the schedule.

  • CVT is the long-term watch item

Subaru CVTs have improved a lot. The original 10-year/100k powertrain warranty is mostly about giving you peace of mind here.

  • Tires wear evenly because of AWD

Symmetrical AWD wants all four tires within 2/32 inch of each other. That sometimes means buying 4 when you'd otherwise replace 2.

Reality check before you buy

Subaru Forester
  • If you live where it snows, AWD-as-standard is a real win.

  • Forester is slow. Not dangerously slow, but it won't merge gracefully onto fast freeways without effort.

  • Wilderness trim is genuinely capable off-pavement. It also costs noticeably more.

  • Visibility is unmatched. There is glass everywhere. Owners love it.

Common questions about owning a Subaru Forester

Honest answers, no sales pitch.

  • Forester vs Outback?
Outback is longer, more wagon-shaped, and has more cargo room behind the second row. Forester is taller, easier to get in and out of, and slightly tighter inside.
  • Is the Forester reliable?
Current generation is much improved. Older 2013–2018 Foresters had oil-consumption issues with the FB25; the FA20 in current models has a strong track record.
  • Hybrid coming?
Subaru hybrid technology has trailed the competition. Current 'hybrid' Forester variants are mild and don't transform fuel economy. If 35+ MPG is non-negotiable, look at RAV4 Hybrid.
